Do not spend money on "conversion therapy" or "gay علاج," and do not send your family members to undergo it either

After reviewing the research, a panel of experts from the American Psychological Association stated that this type of conversion cannot change sexual orientation and may cause harm. In a U.S. survey, nearly 90% of those who underwent conversion had experienced suicidal ideation. In China, a psychiatric hospital forcibly admitted a man under the guise of "sexual preference disorder," and the court ruled it an infringement, awarding 5000 yuan in compensation.

No cost. What is saved is the revenue of conversion agencies, psychological clinics, and "anti-gay" organizations. The difficulty lies in family members insisting on sending them.

Benefit

A working group report from the American Psychological Association 2009 years ago states that efforts to change sexual orientation are "unlikely to be successful and carry a certain risk of harm." Regarding sending minors to coercive or inpatient conversion programs, the report recommends that neither parents nor children should consider them. A nationally representative survey in the United States visited 1518 sexual minority adults, approximately 7% of whom had undergone conversion, with eighty percent coming from religious backgrounds. After adjusting for factors such as age and childhood adversity, the OR for having suicidal ideation in one's lifetime among those who underwent conversion was 1.92 (95% CI 1.01–3.64, as high as about ninety percent). The OR for having planned suicide was 1.75 (1.01–3.06). The OR for suicide attempts involving no injury or minor injury was 1.88 (1.01–3.50).Another study visited 245 young people aged 21 to 25. Among those whose adolescence was not corrected, 22.0% had attempted suicide. Among those whose parents personally attempted to change their child's sexual orientation, the figure was 48.1%. Among those whose parents also sent them to see therapists or religious figures, the figure was 62.8%. The World Health Organization's disease classification ICD-10 states: "Sexual orientation itself is not considered a disorder." In 2017, the Yicheng District Court of Zhumadian, Henan, tried a case: a psychiatric hospital forcibly admitted a man under the name of "sexual preference disorder." The court ruled that his "condition was general, and there were no behaviors or dangers such as suicide, harming others, or destroying property, which do not meet the conditions for mandatory treatment." The court ordered the hospital to issue a public apology and pay mental distress compensation of 5000 yuan (USA / China)

Book note

Controversial. Sullins 2022 recalculated using the same dataset, subtracting suicidal ideation that existed prior to conversion. Based on this calculation, conversion and suicidal ideation are no longer positively correlated (OR 0.44, 0.20–0.94). The institution where Sullins is located holds an anti-homosexuality stance, and the original author has also written a response. Therefore, the extent of the harm remains controversial, but there is no seen counter-evidence regarding the point that it "cannot be changed." A grade of B is given because the figures for harm all come from surveys based on retrospective recall. Legally, inpatient treatment follows the principle of voluntariness; involuntary hospitalization can only occur in cases of severe mental disorder accompanied by a danger of harming oneself or others. Psychological counselors are not permitted to perform psychotherapy. Intentionally sending someone who does not have a mental disorder into the hospital for treatment entails liability for compensation. If you are experiencing long-term emotional distress because of this matter, you can visit a psychiatric or clinical psychology department; the goal is to alleviate the suffering. Regarding how the family should respond after the child speaks up, please refer to Section 30, Article 15 (the child stating they are attracted to the same sex). The beneficiaries are yourself and your family members.
