Do not believe that "masturbation harms the body" or that "abstinence is the only way to improve"; what truly matters is whether it interferes with your sleep, work, and relationships

No research suggests that masturbation harms the body. On the contrary, a large-scale study in the US found that men with more frequent ejaculation had about a 20% lower risk of prostate cancer. A study in the UK showed that those with high frequency in their twenties and thirties faced a higher risk, so neither side should be used as a reason to treat it as physical exercise. Many people feel they are "addicted to pornography" primarily because it conflicts with their own moral values.

Cost

No cost. What you save is the money spent on "kidney-tonifying" folk remedies and "abstinence" courses, as well as the long-term anxiety caused by self-reproach.

Benefit

First, look at physical health. A US study tracked 31925 men until 2010. Each individual self-reported their monthly ejaculation frequency and was then grouped by frequency. Compared to those with 4 to 7 times per month, those with more than 21 times per month had a prostate cancer HR of 0.81 (95% CI 0.72–0.92, a reduction of approximately 19%), based on frequencies at ages 20 to 29. Based on frequencies at ages 40 to 49, the HR was 0.78 (0.69–0.89, a reduction of approximately 22%). The reduction primarily involved low-risk prostate cancer. The opposing view is a UK case-control study that compared 431 patients diagnosed before age 60 with 409 controls. People who masturbate frequently in their twenties and thirties have a higher risk, while those who do so frequently in their fifties have a lower risk. Also, consider pornographic content. A systematic review and meta-analysis suggests that many people feel they are "addicted" primarily because their behavior does not align with their personal beliefs, rather than just due to high consumption (USA / UK)

Book note

Controversial. Both of these studies on prostate cancer are merely observational and lack a control group; furthermore, the frequency was based on self-reporting/recall, so the conclusion can only be that "no evidence of harm was seen," rather than an endorsement to increase frequency. The author of the British study himself noted that the period in their fifties might involve a decrease in frequency due to pre-existing illness. The abstract of the pornography study did not provide an effect size, so only the direction is noted here. The benefit is defined as small because the reduction primarily concerns low-risk prostate cancer, not mortality. The true signals that one should seek psychiatric or psychological help are: staying up late because of this, missing work, affecting partner relationships, or being unable to stop even when wanting to. For information on staying up late, see Section 3, Item 9 (do not stay up late for games, short videos, or pornographic content). If you are worried that watching pornography has caused erectile issues, first follow the instructions in Section 1, Item 28 (if erectile function is problematic, check cardiovascular health first). For the legal consequences of distributing to groups or selling resources, see Section 9, Article 4 (regarding explicit videos, you are responsible for your own actions). The beneficiary is yourself.
