Stay low to the ground during a fire, feel the door before opening it, don’t open a hot door, use stairs not elevators, and never look back after escaping

Drop to the ground and crawl under the smoke toward the nearest exit. Before opening a door, feel the knob and the surface of the door itself; if either feels hot or smoke is seeping through the crack, do not open it and instead head for the other exit. Open the door slowly, and shut it immediately if thick smoke appears. Always use stairs rather than elevators, since power outages can trap you inside. Once outside, do not return for any reason. If your clothes catch fire, stop moving, lie down, roll on the ground, and shield your face with your hands.

Cost

Installing one or two standalone smoke detectors at home costs only a few dozen yuan. It also helps to check in advance where the two possible exits are located in the hallway.

Benefit

Original text of US FEMA escape instructions: "Get low to the ground and crawl under the smoke toward the exit." Before opening a door, touch the doorknob and the door itself; "If it is hot, or if smoke is coming through the cracks, do not open this door, use a second route." Open doors slowly, and close them immediately if thick smoke appears. If your clothes catch fire, "Stop, Drop, and Roll," and use your hands to protect your face. If you cannot escape, close the door, use cloth or tape to seal the cracks around the door and vents, and call to report your location. The fire self-rescue tips from the Ministry of Emergency Management are consistent with this: Do not use elevators to escape; if the fire is not large, try to run downstairs; cover your nose and mouth with a wet towel or mask, and evacuate by crawling or bending low.

Book note

Do not take the elevator; if the power goes out, you will be trapped inside. Do not turn back to grab belongings. Do not run upward unless you have confirmed the rooftop door is open. Do not jump from buildings. A wet towel should be folded 3 times to create 8 layers; do not use too much water, as being too wet can actually make it harder to breathe. When smoke and toxic gases are too dense, even a towel will not be able to block them.
