If a carbon monoxide alarm goes off, or if everyone in a room suddenly has headaches, nausea, or dizziness, get outside first and then call for help
If the alarm sounds, or if everyone in a room simultaneously experiences headaches, nausea, or dizziness, move everyone outdoors first, then call for help. Do not stay inside to investigate the cause, and do not go back to turn off valves. Symptoms resemble a cold; 'feeling better once outside' is the strongest indicator. In China, 2018 people were reported to have died from carbon monoxide poisoning in 11523, with the highest numbers occurring in winter, mostly while at home.

The China CDC's cause-of-death surveillance system reported 11523 deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning in 2018 year. The highest numbers were in 1 month (2845 cases), 2 month (2321 cases), and 12 month (2010 cases). During these three months in winter, those who died at home accounted for 66% to 73%. These are numbers reported by the system, not estimates based on the national population. In the United States, more than 400 people die every year from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning unrelated to fires. More than 10 ten thousand people enter the emergency room, and more than 1.4 ten thousand people are hospitalized.
